Calculates your Body Mass Index (BMI) from your height and weight in either metric (cm/kg) or imperial (in/lb) units. Returns the BMI value to one decimal place, classifies it on the WHO standard scale (underweight, normal, overweight, obese class I-III), shows the BMI Prime ratio, and computes the healthy weight range for your height.
BMI is the most widely-used screening tool for weight categories that may lead to health problems. While it's not a perfect measure (it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat), it's a fast, free, accessible first-pass indicator that millions of people use daily to check whether they fall in a healthy range. The calculator handles both metric and imperial units, with cm/m auto-detection for height and full WHO classification with educational descriptions.

Body Mass Index is a simple weight-to-height ratio (weight ÷ height²). It estimates body fat for most adults but is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.
Is the WHO classification accurate?
For population screening yes, but it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or ethnicity. Athletes routinely score 'overweight' or 'obese'.
What is BMI Prime?
It's a simpler ratio: actual BMI ÷ 25 (the upper normal). 1.0 = upper normal, 1.5 = 50% over the upper normal. Clinicians find it easier to read.
Should I use metric or imperial?
Both produce identical results. Use whichever you measure in. Use the 'Swap units' button to convert without re-entering values.
Is the calculation done in my browser? Yes
your height and weight never leave your device, never touch a server, never get logged.
What is the healthy weight range?
For any height, the healthy BMI is 18.5-24.9. The calculator shows the corresponding weight range automatically.
